Breakfast at Medan Selera Stadium

Malaysians are foodies, with some being really die hard foodies. At the mere mention of eating at a Medan Selera (aka Food Court), many will shy away as Malaysians prefer to eat at speciality hawkers (or restaurants) or highly reviewed, and sometimes what we call “as seen on social media” places. In Ipoh, there are many small businesses that operate from a Medan Selera and are famous with the locals…. it may not be “haute cuisine” nor picture perfect, but they do serve some of the tastiest daily Malaysian staples. So, after our usual morning briefing, our family members decided to trod on down to one of Ipoh’s famous Medan Selera Stadium (they have both halal and non halal stalls known to be pretty famous) within walking distance to M Roof Hotel & Residences. However, being the lazy people we are, we took 2 cars and the foodie five jumped with glee at the thought of free food! Papa and Mama was busy with scolding our naughty siblings at home, so we went and were surprised to find the location crowded with people and had some difficulty in finding an empty table…. at 10.30 am! Prior to our trip, we heard numerous recommendations regarding STALL NO 51 –  Wak Nasi Lemak famous for their Kuey Teow Goreng Basah, Nasi Lemak and Nasi Goreng Kampung. For Roti Canai (or prata as our southern neighbours would say) would be the famous Fuad Roti Canai at STALL NO 54 featuring Roti Canai Banjir … something which one of our family members has not tried before. We also ordered Teh Tarik and Teh ‘O’ Ice Limau as the puuurrrfffeeeccctttt accompaniment to our breakfast. One of our family members really likes their Teh Tarik as it was super smooth and not so sweet. A word of advice, their parking is quite full so be sure to come earlier if you really want to enjoy a stress-free breakfast!

As we were catching up on the latest gossips; our ‘Kuey Teow Goreng Basah’ arrived! Kuey Teow Goreng is synonymous with Penang and normally dry, but the Malay version (at times called Kuey Teow Goreng Utara) has some semblance of gravy. And how was the taste? Well, though it looked pretty humble on our first impression, but once in our mouths, it tasted rich with it’s gravy and eggs intermingled, not to mention the juicy prawns but we only ate half of it as we were waiting for our Roti Canai Bawang and  Roti Banjir Telur. The best part is that the Kuey Teow Goreng only costs up RM4.50 per plate, which is relatively fair for Ipoh. More Food Binge on the way!

Teh Tarik, Nasi Lemak and Roti Canai Banjir

Roti Banjir Telur and Roti Canai Bawang came shortly after Kuey Teow Goreng Basah. Roti Canai Banjir means literally just that, dhal curry (or other curries or sambal) poured generously over your freshly made Roti and is the preferred choice amongst some of our Family members. Some of our Family members has not even tried this (surprise, surprise!). We didn’t expect much from it’s looks, but once we used our forks to tear it apart, we can see that the roti was of the thicker variety. This caused some concern but when we took a bite …. aaaahhhhhh, it reared it  fluffy head, and we were transported to the clouds. The accompanying dhal was thick enough and enhanced the overall experience. A word of warning! The Sambal is a real KICKER! It’s spicy and for those who cannot partake in spiciness, please do not add sambal!

More we wanted more so we ordered a couple a Nasi Lemak from Fuad Roti Canai, since everyone around us seemed to be eating it. You have the choice of the typical nasi lemak (Sambal, Egg, Ikan Bilis and Rice) but you could also add Daging (Beef), Ayam, Sotong Basah and other dishes here. Being prudent, we decided to have the normal nasi lemak. Once again, it failed in the looks department, but once you taste it, OMG! Though tasty, we were lucky that BOMBA headquarters was just nearby! What a way to wake up for RM1.50 per plate. We knew Papa would love this, as he loves things all SPICY. So we decided to get him to taste (and possibly suffer) one bungkus of Nasi Lemak with more sambal and one Nasi Goreng Kampung with more chili padi. When we returned to our offices, Papa finished both packets of, claiming the Nasi Lemak; “POWER! Sweet enough sambal and perfect balance of super spiciness!” and then proceed to try the Nasi Goreng and shouted, “POWER GILER! It was tasty with the smell of the wok and the chilies made it wonderfully spicy!”. And so we had a gloomy day, as Papa did not show any signs of suffering. WARNING AGAIN! If you can’t take spiciness, please ask them to cook it with less chili or for nasi lemak, add less sambal.

Here’s the bottom line; for 5 persons with takeaway for Papa, we spent around RM50 for breakfast. We can safely say we found a great place near M Roof Hotel & Residences for your local taste food binge of Malaysian Favourites!
