Introducing the new kid on the block, Jack & Grill Steak House. Our neighbor has finally opened its doors and is ready to serve. Being the foodie we are, we wasted no time and scrambled over to taste some of their signature dishes. Founded by Jack Neo, there is another branch located at Medan Ipoh, just behind Kinta City Mall. They serve western dishes with a twist, curated to local taste buds. We guarantee that you will be spoilt with choice. Jack has over 20 years of experience in the F&B industry and he has traveled all over to look for inspiration in his recipes. According to Jack, his first branch was open since 2016 before he decided on opening a second branch. Lucky for us, it is a few steps away from our home.
According to Lonely Planet, Ipoh is the ‘lesser known’ food capital in Malaysia. With food courts, local restaurants and hawker stalls serving the same recipe for decades, therefore provides a divine culinary experience. Whenever there is a long holiday, Ipoh is usually flooded with tourists and food hunters. This time around, we have brought some of our family members to Tuck Kee Ipoh, one of the fried noodle “specialists” restaurant that has been around since 1963 at the same location, 55 years ago
Let us come to another unique cafe; nestled between the row of old colonial shop lots along Jalan Sultan Iskandar, Cakchibow Cafe has retained the original building structure that was originally built in 1931, giving the cafe a unique edge amongst the other hipster cafe’s in Ipoh specializing in Western Meals. Opened in 18th December 2015 by Mr. Adriz Farik Bin Abdul Halim, Cakchibow Cafe has made up a name for themselves serving hefty meals and drinks at an affordable price.
Easter Egg! If you are following our food trials, you would have noticed that we were rediscovering some of the older Foodie Places that have existed for around 60 years old in conjunction with our Malaysian National Day. You can read more on our postings of these establishments of Kedai Kopi Yong Suan and Cathay Mee Stall. So we now come to the 61 year old Hoong Tho Restaurant, dishing out hearty, sumptuous meals since 1957, located in the city’s Old Town area, several doors down from Nam Heong Ipoh. Renowned locally as one of the oldest Chinese restaurant serving delicious noodles, homemade fish paste, fried wanton (dumplings), sang har meen (braised egg noodles with fresh prawns), and wat tan hor (stir fried flat rice noodle with mixed meats and vegetables). Besides their bowls of delectable noodles, they are noted for their savoury local confectioneries such as egg tart, traditional biscuits and some mooncake biscuits.
What is Nasi Ganja all about? For the unordained; Ganja is the Malay word for Cannabis! Goodness, will I be addicted to it? Is it legal?? These are some of the conversations overheard when one mentions this. However, there is no illegal substance used in the recipe (phew). The term was coined as the proprietor of Nasi Kandar Ayam Merah’s built up a slew of die-hard fans, claiming his cooking is so tasty that it is as addictive as ‘ganja’ or cannabis. Unfortunately (or fortunately to some) there are those who claim that after a full Nasi Ganja meal, you will feel sleepy akin to a trans like state. Truth is, who doesn’t after a satisfying meal?
