Breakfast Diary- Xin Quan Fang
To start off, allow me to introduce Xin Quan Fang. To us, a bowl or a plate of noodles is perfect. We normally save the rice meals for the night and opt for noodles in the morning.
Ipoh, in fact the paradise of food. From the glorious chicken bean sprout to the soft and seamless tau fu fa. Ipoh is gifted with the water from limestone surrounding the city. Being spoilt with choices, how do the locals choose?
Xin Quan Fang Curry Noodles
Famous for their Curry Noodles, it is almost impossible to get a spot during the weekends and waiting time can take up to 2 hours. What’s the hype about it? Located opposite the police station, you can smell the strong and pungent curry a mile away. We scrambled to find a spot with lady luck by our side. However, do not wave your hands to get their attention, it will only leave you being ignored or even a scolding. So, just wait patiently and play with your gadgets or even have a cup or two of coffee. It is because, the shop is known for their infamous service. The menu is simple, a normal bowl if noodle (small), extra noodles (big) and the ‘liew” the side dishes which must not be missed.
When it is your turn, the boss will then come personally to your table. For us, it took around 15 minutes. After that, he will go to his station to prepare the noodles. He will take his own sweet time and prepare the dishes with love even if the queue is pouring in.
The real deal
Another 15 minutes later, our bowls came towards us and with the side of “liew”. Consisting of roasted pork, parts of pork, homemade char siew, shredded chicken and bean sprout, topped with prawns. I opt for the dry curry version which is a thicker curry with tossed with hor fun and mai fun. Honestly, RM5.50 for a bowl of small noodles was too little even for a small eater like me. For instance, pretty much like two bowl of boat noodles in one. Just four spoonful and that was it! Hence, not enough to feed my appetite.
Nonetheless, the taste itself was good. If you’re a fan of Indian curry, this is a good option. Other versions of curry noddle elsewhere are more watery but Xin Quan Fang’s was thick and fragrant. The bowl of “liew” came with a tiny bowl of chili paste. Underneath the layer of oil, the sweet and spicy paste matches perfectly with the sides.
To conclude, this the place to go if you have time to spare and don’t mind the infamous attitude. For me, I probably would not return. For years I heard people say the “Ma Ta Liu” (police station) Xin Quan Fang Curry Mee and I finally went and try it myself for this breakfast series. However, Locals still go there but it is not everyone’s choice. Another choice of Curry Mee is Sun Seng Fatt which is just next to M Boutique. A great alternative for our guests here.
